The abstractions and studies are intended as groundwork and practice for bigger works - a launching pad for an expanded visual idea - a seed where a piece was started. But for some reason, they remain at this stage - seminal ideas, kernels of thought and design and, ultimately, ends in themselves. Sometimes, it's a doodle in a margin that entices me and I elaborate upon it, color it in, add white out and a few bisecting lines. Then I quit and let the study stand on its own. A fait accompli and reason alone to spend time with the partial sketch or study. Will it become something larger and more important in time? Grow appendages and wings and fly away to another dimension of representation? I don't know, but surely the viewer will make this assessment.
