These spontaneous drawings were done on restaurant receipts, coffee cups, coffee cup sleeves, napkins and other found objects.

They depict people Alden happened to be sharing time or a meal with, and many of the drawings were given to the subjects. In most cases, all that remains of these impromptu portraits are the photocopies that Alden kept as records.
